Motivation v.s Inspiration

Following my research on the effects of motivation and one's emotions, I have discovered the concept of the law of attraction from the Secret as well as from Andy Shaw, a mindset strategist, blogger and author of A Bug Free Mind
Before I go into more depth about all of this, I have recently read an article by Shaw, suggesting a different way of looking at the connection between motivation and inspiration. He states that, "When you are inspired you no longer need motivation." The difference is that inspiration always comes in abundance. However motivation is like fuel, where you have to consider how much of it you have.

Motivation is still a necessity in order to strive for success or overcome adversities. Shaw suggests here that instead it follows inspiration, like a natural instinct or form of action from being inspired. Same as the link between emotions/ feelings and one's reactions. Shaw clarifies this (using an example of successful people) by explaining that, "Successful people don’t know that as they haven’t looked at it for long enough. They are naturally motivated and therefore do not need to consider motivation...But what they state to their subconscious mind when they use the word motivated in the form of a feeling is, ‘Inspired to fulfil my dream, until completion.’(Shaw, A. 2014) Although it is what drives them to reach for their dreams motivation comes to them naturally, like on autopilot.

This change in perspective does now make sense when relating it to dancers. Reflecting back at all the times I had been motivated to work on something whether it was higher legs, building strength, recovering from an injury in a sensible manner, approaching teachers or directors etc., I was first inspired by someone or something. Inspiration gave me the drive a lot more than motivation. So whenever I have a difficult time, or want to really work on something big what helps is to have a picture in mind of what inspired me (e.g. a certain dancer, music).

"Inspiration is an abundant fuel source which requires no new supply. One drop has been enough to power some of the greatest achievements we as humans have made so far. It is the perfect fuel for us! It is the fuel we were designed for." (Shaw, A. 2015)
